Barriers faced by blind and partially sighted people – RNIB Strategic prioritisation research
Summary
An survey looking into the barriers faced by partially sighted people
· Blind and partially sighted people told us that the largest barrier they face in participating equally in life is the attitudes of the general public. Lack of knowledge amongst the general public combined with low expectations of what people with sight loss can achieve are considered to be the main issues.
· Employment is the second biggest priority for blind and partially sighted people – both getting a job and staying in employment as they lose their sight. The attitudes of employers are felt to prevent access to opportunities along with employers not making the necessary adjustments.
· Navigating the streets – and in particular obstructions on pavements – forms the third largest barrier.
· Claiming benefits, accessing education and support for children and young people and accessing social and leisure opportunities are also prioritised by blind and partially sighted people as being the barriers that need to be overcome to participate equally.
